A Word from our President

3 kittens
Dear Friends and Members

When gazing in the eyes of these beautiful kittens it's easy to see how happy, content, safe and very healthy they look now, however this was not the case a few months ago.

A concerned neighbor found the animals and contacted us for help. It seems the owner moved away leaving behind a mother cat and 5 kittens. At first glance they appeared to be ok, but we soon discovered that the animals had been medically neglected requiring months of extensive testing & treatment along with daily neutering care. Today, the animals are doing great and have adjusted beautifully in their new homes. Despite everything they had to put up with, these sweet babies are still huge love bugs!

Penny, Sterling, Pewter, Little Bear and Max have been with us for over a year now. They still await that special someone who can offer them patience and understanding as they work through a shy, reserved disposition. Since our shelter is more like a sanctuary, cats are never euthanized for space. For now these cats, like others, are perfectly content, safe and healthy and will remain with us for as long as it takes.

We fear to think of what could have happened to her had we not been there to help.

Mortality rates in orphan kittens are very high. They require skilled level care, especially critical during the first 4 weeks. Kittens should never leave their mother's care until 8 weeks of age unless the mother is very sick. A stray mother cat is always at high risk of getting killed, many leave behind kittens that are unable to survive on their own. Abandonment of kitten litters is also a major problem and especially critical in this area due to our severe climates. For this reason, homeless mother cats and kittens are given priority for space in our shelter. When mother cats and kittens come to our facility, it's guaranteed they'll be provided with specialty care. All animals are spayed or neutered prior to adoption.

The homeless population remains a critical concern. Precious Paws Rescue and Adoption began saving strays in 2002 with thousands of lives being spared. Petco recently awarded $1,000 towards our spay/neuter program, the money will help reduce the pet population. Low income pet owners needing assistance should contact us for more information. We are doing the best we can with what we have but we need to be able to do much more. Financial stability is critical in order to accomplish our mission and meet our goals. We'd like to send our heartfelt thanks and appreciation to all those who have made an effort to help us, we are deeply grateful.

Cruelty, neglect and abuse are prevalent in every town. The lack of compassion is an issue we have difficulty dealing with. The statistics are shocking and very disturbing. Although new laws have been enacted to protect innocent animals, we all have to do our part to help enforce these laws.  Thanks to the daily efforts of dedicated volunteers, many homeless, sick and injured animals are receiving the care they need. Volunteer burn out is at a record high level; the work is very challenging but i is also very rewarding. Precious Paws is the first and only one of its kind in Aroostook County and the only shelter available for Valley citizens. The future success of this organization is dependent on the generosity of the public. Your support is imperative to our success.

A $5.00 donation will help purchase a vaccine that will protect and prevent the spread of contagious disease. $10.00 will buy a bag of healthy food to feed 5 cats for a month. $20.00 will pay for a leukemia test while $40.00 will cover the cost to neuter a male cat. $70.00 will cover the cost to spay a female cat and a generous contribution will help pay for expensive operating and veterinarian costs.

With fall upon us, and bitter cold temperatures around the corner, many of you are busy preparing for the cold weather that lie ahead to ensure your comfort and safety during the long winter months. For animals that have no place to call home, it is especially difficult. Many will not make it through the winter. Mother cats that give birth in the fall are at very high risk. Kittens do not stand a chance unless they can be sheltered. It will soon be painstaking difficult for them to ease their hunger as the snow begins to cover most food sources that are usually available during summer months. Let us band together to bring these animals to safety. Please send your gift today. No amount is ever too small. Your help can ensure that the animals will receive the necessary care for years to come.

Yes!! I care and want to help save lives too, here's my gift for the animals-
